No disparity in stipends paid to interns working in GMCs of both regions: Dr Shashi

JAMMU, June 29: There is no disparity in stipends paid to interns working in Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) of both the regions of Jammu and Kashmir and all interns are getting equal stipend of Rs 12,500 in medical colleges across the Union Territory.
This was stated by Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma, Principal and Dean, Government Medical College and Associated Hospitals Jammu while clearing over the issue. She said that the claim made by some interns working in GMCs of Kashmir that their counterparts in Jammu are getting double the stipend they receive, is totally false.
She said that in some states/Union Territories of India like Delhi, West Bengal etc, the interns are getting Rs 25000 to Rs 27000 stipend per month but in majority of the states of the country, the interns are being paid Rs 12000 to 13000 per month as stipend.
Dr Shashi said that for last some years, there was demand from the interns across J&K to enhance their stipend and after several representations made by them to the Administrative Secretary Health and Medical Education Department, a committee has been constituted by the Department to give its recommendations on the issue.
She said very soon the Committee will submit its report on the issue and accordingly, the decision will be taken by the Administrative Department. “However, the interns across J&K are demanding that they should be considered as half doctors and accordingly, they should be paid half of the basic salary of a Medical Officer (in J&K) as monthly stipend,” she added.
