LEH, July 29: The 4th edition of two days long Nomadic Festival in Chibra, Kargyam Changthang was concluded here today.
The festival was organized by the Cultural Academy in collaboration with LAHDC Leh, the event featured a bustling array of attractions including food stalls, traditional dresses, handicrafts, and exhilarating events like the horse race.
Over 1000 artists from 50 villages of Changthang participated, demonstrating the depth and diversity of their cultural expressions.
The festival commenced with a ceremonial offering by the monastery’s monks to purify the surroundings.
The event was graced by the Executive Councillor for RDD, Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Yakzee emphasized the collaborative efforts of the Cultural Academy, UT Administration, and LAHDC Leh in addressing the challenges faced by the nomadic communities.
He highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage amidst evolving trends towards tourism and commercialization of livestock. Notably, efforts such as the recent increase in livestock population by 30% and distribution of kid pens in the Changthang region reflect ongoing initiatives to support sustainable nomadic practices.
Yakzee expressed commitment to gathering insights from local communities to inform future preservation efforts.
He acknowledged milestones like the GI tag for Pashmina Ladakh Lena and highlighted the rejuvenation of the Sheep Husbandry Department, highlighting their pivotal role in sustaining nomadic livelihoods.
A highlight of this year’s festival was the introduction of the Councillor Award, recognizing exceptional cultural performances with a cash prize.
Special attractions included the Nomadic Bazaar with Handicraft and Handloom products, Nomadic Cuisine, a Nomadic Museum, traditional sports like Archery and Horse Racing, Monastic Mask Dance, mock celebrations of local Festivals, and various other leisure activities.
Vibrant traditional cultural performances from across the Changthang region were also prominently featured during the festivities.
Among others who graced the event included Administrative Secretary of the Tourism Department, Vikram Singh Malik, Councillor Chushul, Konchok Stanzin, Councillor Nyoma, Ishey Spalzang, Nominated Councillor, Ven Konchok Tsepel and the nambardars of village heads.
