SRINAGAR: Responding to allegations that the government was trying to change the demography of the state by settling non-state subjects in Jammu region, Deputy Chief Minster Nirmal Singh today said everyone has a right to live in Jammu and Kashmir.
However, he said non-state subjects are living as tenants and not as owners. Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister said action will be taken against those provided shelter under Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) if they fail to produce State Subject certificates.
Replying to a question by Sat Paul Sharma in the Legislative Assembly, Dr Singh said Jammu Development Authority (JDA) has constructed 150 dwelling units for providing shelter to slum dwellers and homeless persons at Rajiv Nagar in the year 2005 under VAMBAY.
Dr Singh however, said none of the occupants have furnished permanent resident certificate till date. “The revenue authorities and Tehsildar JDA is being asked to take action for obtaining permanent Residents certificate from occupants of these dwelling units,” he said.
He said under the scheme, the beneficiaries who were Below Poverty Line and whose jhuggies were demolished were provided rent of Rs 150 per month.
Hitting out at Independent Er Abdul Rashid over his allegation that the government is trying to change the demography of the state, he said non-state subjects also have a right to live in Jammu and Kashmir, but, he said they are living as tenants and not as owners of flats.
Er Rashid, while asking a supplementary, alleged that the government was trying to change the demography of the state by the settlement of non-state subject in the Jammu region. (AGENCIES)
