NEW DELHI: There is need for peace and harmonious environment in the society for development and nonviolence is the only path to creating a healthy society, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said.
Nonviolence is also important because violence does not solve any problem and it leads to repetition of violence. Through dialogue and negotiation every problem can be solved Mr Naidu said while addressing the Ahimsa Diwas Function organised by Ahimsa Vishwa Bharati on its 13th Foundation Day, here on Sunday.
The Vice President said establishing nonviolence, peace and goodwill in society, nation and all over the world has been the purpose behind the establishment of Vishwa Bharati Institute.
“By associating religion with social service, we can make it a means of eradicating social evils and linking religion to spirituality,” he added.
Stating that many great men in India like Lord Mahavir, Lord Buddha gave a lot of emphasis on nonviolence,” Mr Naidu said Mahatma Gandhi had liberated India with the weapons of nonviolence. “Nonviolence does not mean cowardice”.
He said Indian culture was pluralistic and unity in diversity was its fundamental characteristic. Sarvadharma sadbhava (harmony) was its original mantra and this was where the nonviolence, peace and goodwill started.
He also expressed hope that Ahimsa Vishwa Bharati Institution would play an important role in building society and nation by connecting the work of service in the society, especially the younger generation to the path of nonviolence.
