LEH, Nov 18: The Northern Command and Ladakh-based Fire and Fury Corps, also known as 14 Corps which looks after the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in Eastern Ladakh, today recalled the sacrifices of soldiers in the Battle of Rezang La in 1962.
It was on November 18, 1962 that the valiant soldiers of ‘C’ Company of 13 Kumaon, had repulsed a series of attacks launched by the Chinese troops.
“In the battle of Rezang La, Major Shaitan Singh displayed unparalleled gallantry, indomitable courage and exemplary devotion towards duty in the best tradition of Indian Army. He was posthumously awarded Param Vir Chakra,” the Northern Command said in a post on X.
It also posted a video.
Major General MS Mokha, Chief of Staff, Leh-based Fire and Fury Corps along with other distinguished guests of the Corps, paid tribute to 114 bravehearts of the Chushul Brigade at Rezang La memorial today, marking 61st anniversary of the battle.

Paying rich tribute to the bravehearts, he said that their indomitable courage, unparalleled valour and sacrifice will continue to inspire generations to come.
On the occasion, the Chief of Staff felicitated Veer Naris and children who took part in various competitions in lead up to the event.
The battle of Rezang La is etched in the annals of history as one of the greatest fight by the Indian troops. It stands out for extraordinary valour, grit and determination of `C’ Company of 13 Kumaon that fought to the last man in 1962 war against China, defending Rezang La in Eastern Ladakh under the leadership of Major Shaitan Singh.
Early hours of 18th November 1962 witnessed a fierce battle at Rezang La. Against all odds and despite being outnumbered, the valiant soldiers of `C’ Company repulsed a series of attacks launched by the Chinese. Despite heavy artillery shelling and fierce assaults, Major Shaitan Singh and his 113 bravehearts delivered might blows to the adversary.
The brave soldiers of 13 Kumaon were honoured with one Param Vir Chakra, eight Veer Chakras, four Sena Medals and one Mention-in-Despatches. Their names will forever remind future generations of the brave men who laid down their lives fighting for our country on this day in 1962.
