Northern Command soldiers get one Kirti Chakra, 2 Shaurya Chakras, 12 Sena Medals

JAMMU, Aug 16: The valiant soldiers of the Northern Command have received one Kirti Chakra, two Shaurya Chakras and 12 Sena Medals on the Independence Day.
Major Mahesh Kumar of 22 Rashtriya Rifles (Punjab) has been awarded with Kirti Chakra, country’s second highest gallantry award in peace time. Major Mahesh had eliminated a dreaded foreign terrorist of Lashkar-e-Toiba in a close fight in Sopore town in October 2012. The officer is already a recipient of Sena Medal for gallantry in the North Eastern Theatre.
In additional, the valiant soldiers of Northern Command have also been awarded two Shaurya Chakras and 12 Sena Medals.
Major Mohan Chandra of 4 Kumaon has been awarded Shaurya Chakra for successfully preventing an infiltration bid in North Kashmir in the most inhospitable terrain and weather conditions. His conspicuous valour resulted in elimination of two foreign trained terrorists.
Subedar Balwinder Singh of 22 Rashtriya Rifles (Punjab) has also been awarded Shaurya Chakra for eliminating two terrorists in Sayyadpur village of Sopre district in Northern Kashmir in a hand to hand combat.
Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra has complemented all the ranks of Northern Command for their exemplary service to the Nation and exhorted them to rededicate themselves to safeguard nation’s borders and confront new challenges with traditional professionalism and courage.
