Nowshera gang-rape accused arrested

RAJOURI, Jan 1: All the three accused involved in the gang-rape of a ‘Dalit’ woman at Chowki village in Nowshera tehsil have been arrested by police.
SP Nowshera, Parshotam Sharma told the Excelsior that one of the accused namely, Mohd Rafiq, son of Abdul Aziz, resident of Nowshera town’s Ward No. 2 was arrested last evening from a hide out near Nowshera during raid, the two others were nabbed from two different locations today. They were hiding in the houses of their relatives.
They have been identified Madan Lal, son of Roshan Lal, resident of Chowki and Kaka Ram, son of Kalidas, resident of the same area. Both these rapists are married and have two daughters. Kaka Ram is handicapped from one leg. Madan Lal runs a small shop at the village near water spring where the rape victim Madhu (fake name) had gone to fetch water.
The rape took place in the shop of Madan Lal. Kaka Ram and Rafiq dragged the 25-year-old woman to shop and then all the three sexually assaulted her and also warned not to open mouth otherwise she and her husband will be done to death. The woman was produced before the Judge for recording statement and further investigation was in progress.
Interestingly, when the poor woman and her husband took up the matter with local Panchayat members and sought their help to get an FIR registered with police, some of the Panchayat members, tried to influence the family and also offered to provide them Rs 30,000 as compensation to the rape victim. They also assured some punishment to the accused. However, the victim’s parents and relatives came to the rescue and with the help of Guru Ravi Dass Sabha members contacted SP and SDPO Nowshera. On the statement of the woman all the three accused were arrested. The police also took serious note of the Rs 30,000 offer to the victim by village Panchayat members.
The police registered case FIR No. 306/ 2012 under Section 376 RPC and started investigation. The locals lauded the SDPO, Pardeep Singh and SHO Nowshera for prompt action.
