JAMMU, Jan 29: In observance of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Abhiyan, launched by Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India and the National Girl Child Day, a `Nukkad Natak’ (street corner play) and procession on the theme “Beti Hai To Kal Hai” was staged at three different venues on the Jammu University Campus.
The programme was organized by The Centre for Women’s Studies, JU. The drama enacted by the artists enthralled the audience comprising students, scholars, staff and faculty members of the University.
Prof R D Sharma, Vice Chancellor JU, while addressing in the procession, called for generating awareness about the growth of girl child in healthy environs with thrust on their health and education. He also stressed on the need for the involvement of University fraternity and all in spreading such messages of social relevance to the civil society.
Earlier Prof Pankaj Srivastava, Dean Students Welfare, flagged off the procession from the Social Sciences Block from where it moved towards the Administrative block. The procession culminated in front of the Central Library where the first Nukkad Natak was staged. The Nukkad Nataks were also staged in front of Central Library, DDE and Education/ Sociology/ Law School. The Nukkad Natak, using the folk theatre medium, touched on the theme of dwindling sex ratio and life without females in the society.
Among those who graced the occasion, included Prof Jigar Mohd, Prof Rajni Dhingra, Prof Neeru Sharma, Prof V D Singh, Prof Anita Billawaria, Prof Poonam Dhawan, Prof Jasbir Singh, Prof Abha Chauhan and others.
The artistes were Radhika Thakur, Avni Jain, Dilshad Ahmed, Ashish Bhat, Sandeep Sharma, Sanjay Sonkar, Anup Giri, Devanshu Raina, Ganesh Singh, and writer Director Shashi Bhushan.
