KATHUA, Dec 17: As many as seven athletes including a girl have been selected for the zonal trials by the National Yuva Cooperative Society (NYCS) during day-long selection process for GAIL India Speedstar held at District Police Lines (DPL), here today.
Majority of these five athletes have been selected in under-14 category with two in 100 meters and other three in 200 meters category. Selected boys in under-14 include Dileep Kumar and Kamal Sinha in 100 meters, Sumanyu Jasrotia and Mohd Mutayyib in 200 meters.
Other two athletes selected during the trials were Abhinav Kundal in under-17 200 meters and lone girl athlete, Sonali Sharma in under-14 200 meters.
“In all, 908 young athletes, including 205 girls, turned up for the trials held under the guidance of experts. The participating athletes were from district Kathua, Udhampur, Reasi and Samba”, informed District Representative of Kathua, Akshay Bharti.
In the prize distribution function of the day-long activity, Minister for Forests, Choudhary Lal Singh was the chief guest, who presented certificates to selected athletes and encouraged other participants.
The Minister was accompanied by Joint Secretary of the J&K State Sports Council, Shiv Kumar Sharma, SSP Kathua, Pawan Parihar, President of the Kathua Industries Association, Devinder Verma, District Vice President BJYM Jammu West Rakesh Gupta, Akshay Bharti and State representative of the NYCS, Opinder Sharma.
Earlier, Member Legislative Assembly (MLA), Hiranagar, Kuldeep Raj inaugurated the event.
