JAMMU, Feb 12: Under the guidance and instructions of Chief Justice (Chief Patron, State Judicial Academy) and Committee of Judges, State Judicial Academy comprising Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar, Chairman and Justice Hasnain Masoodi, (Member) organized oath ceremony and lecture on ‘Professional Ethics and Conduct’ for newly enrolled Advocates of Jammu province here today.
Pawan Dev Kotwal, Director, State Judicial Academy administered oath to the Advocates. About 68 Advocates subscribed to the oath and received absolute Advocates’ licenses.
Justice (Retd.) O.P. Sharma delivered lecture on ‘the Professional Ethics for Advocates’. He recalled the life histories of some of great jurists who arose from the Bar to highest echelons of law and justice and their illustrious careers are hallmarks of excellence.
Justice Sharma suggested the lawyers to go through the biographies of M.C. Chagla, Setalvald, Palkivala, Fali Nariman, Soli Sorabji, H.R. Khanna and Marshal (Chief Justice, Supreme Court of United States) and emphasized that their lives are beacon lights for any one who chooses a career in the judicial system.
Justice Sharma reminded the crucial role being played by the Advocates as officers of the court and members of the Bar. He impressed upon the lawyers to work hard with patience and perseverance. “The continuous quest for excellence ensures that the lawyer earns a reputation not only with his clients but also with the Bench. It was the great skill of N. Palkhivala which changed the course of judgment of Keshvananda Bharti’s case and immortalized the concept of fundamental rights”, he said and emphasized upon the virtues of the profession and pointed towards the lamps of advocacy being, ‘honesty, courage, industry, wit, eloquence, knowledge.
Earlier, Pawan Dev Kotwal, Director, State Judicial Academy deliberated on the need for subscription to oath by the lawyers fraternity. The function concluded with vote of thanks by Director, State Judicial Academy. Mehmud Anwar Alnasir, Yahaya Firdous Ahangar, Rajni Sharma, Sub-Judges, Pankaj Kumar Gupta, Deputy Registrar, Jagdish Raj Thakur, Faculty Member and staff of the State Judicial Academy were present on the occasion.
