Srinagar, Oct 14: Emphasizing that the restoration of Statehood is their top priority, J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra said today that the oath-taking for the incoming Government should have taken place in J&K as a State rather than a Union Territory.

Speaking to reporters after paying obeisance at the shrine of Sheikh ul Aalam, Sheikh Noor ud Din Noorani (RA), at Chrar-e-Sharief, Karra stressed the need to be practical and work in a step-by-step manner regarding the restoration of Constitutional guarantees for J&K.
“We have to be practical and not mislead people. The first step would be the restoration of Statehood, and the rest will follow. We should not jump to conclusions, skipping the steps in between. Let us be practical,” he said.
Karra reiterated that the biggest issue for them is the restoration of Statehood for J&K and said that the Congress-NC alliance has taken on the challenge of running the Government to restore the rights of the people of J&K and the constitutional guarantees.
“This Government is the beginning of a new struggle. As I said, the biggest issue is Statehood and the restoration of rights, be it land or jobs. For that, we must struggle,” he said.
The JKPCC president further stated that the incoming Government marks the beginning of a new struggle, focusing on land rights and jobs.
“For me, the oath ceremony for the new Government should have taken place in J&K as a State, not as a Union Territory,” he reiterated.
He added: “Young people are grappling with unemployment, and we must address that. The Government will need to create dignified employment opportunities-these are the challenges ahead.”
Karra also criticized the Lieutenant Governor’s administration for continuing to issue orders despite the presence of elected representatives.
“I disagree with this approach. There is no logic in the administration issuing orders when the people have elected their own representatives. It is the duty of the popular Government to make decisions,” Karra said.
He further mentioned that the new Government will review the “anti-people” laws passed by the LG administration.
Regarding the oath-taking of the new Government following the end of President’s rule after six years, Karra expressed optimism, saying, “In the coming days, we will witness the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected representatives.”
