Off-color Dogri play comes as a disappoint for spectators

Lalit Gupta JAMMU, Feb 9: In order to give a due representation to local language, J&K Cultural Academy's decision to stage a Dogri play on the very next day of International theatre festival which concluded on Feb 8, 2016, proved to be a damper as today's off-color performance was nowhere near the preceding class productions staged by invited groups. Although Mohan Singh's Dogri play 'Dana Sochoo Toh Saeyiee' presented at the Abhinav Theatre, here today, was undoubtedly a well written script that mirrored the clash of values in a middle class family, comprising of always-fighting parents, one married son and his wife, unmarried son and daughter. The constant nagging between the parents starts worrying the otherwise obedient younger generation in the home. The hell breaks loose when the father on his own finalizes the engagement of the unmarried son and the mother fixes match for her daughter. The younger lot, with the help of their father's friend makes the parents realizes how their clash of egos is going to harm the future of their children. The play ends with parents seeing the light of reason and agreeing to fulfill the aspirations of their children. Though the audience got connected with earthy realism of the script full of chaste Dogri idioms, maxims and puns, but it was the average acting-even a shade less that the earlier of performance of same play in Academy's annual festival in December 2015-which came as a disappointment to spectators who had been watching a six-day bonanza of quality plays both in terms of creative treatments of content as well as form. The J&K Cultural Academy should have shown better application of mind in selection of today's play, was the opinion of many disappointed spectators. Today's play was directed by Javed Gill and presented by Society for Environment, Education and Modern Arts. Tomorrow a play in Gojari is going to be staged at Abhinav Theatre.
