SRINAGAR, Dec 9: Security forces tonight launched cordon and searches operation in Shopian district of South Kashmir after a brief encounter with militants.
Army’s 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) tonight cordon off Ganawpora and Barthipora villages of Shopian district, following inputs regarding movement of militants.
As they challenged militants, the latter opened fire on the Army men leading to a brief gun battle. Militants, however, fled from the spot and were believed to have taken shelter either in Ganawpora or Barthipora.
Army and Police cordoned off these villages and have called more troops to strengthen the cordon so as to prevent militants from fleeing.
Sources said that security forces had information about movement of three militants and laid the ambush.
In the meantime, an Over Ground Worker of Lashkar-e-Toiba was arrested by security forces during operation in Handwara area of Kupwara district today.
Police said that on a specific input, Handwara Police, 30RR and 92 CRPF launched a joint operation and arrested one Over Ground Worker of LeT identified as Rayaz Ahmed Khan alias Bita Khan alias Baba  son of Abdul Rashid Khan from his home at Hajin, Handwara.
Security forces also destroyed one hideout in his house and recovered one AK 56 rifle, 2 magazines, 25 rounds of AK 56, one spare butt and one wire cutter from the hideout.
