Cleanliness is next to Godliness, was the slogan that used to decorate the walls of classrooms in the schools of our State. Many schools used to observe “Safai ka hafta” the weak of cleanliness. Then the cleanest boy or girl in the class was given a certificate of merit. These were incentives to boost the urge among the students to remain clean. It was emphasized that one should keep one’s environments also clean. Last year Prime Minister Modi launched Swachh Bharat programme. Its purpose was to inculcate among the people of the country, in cities, towns and villages to keep their environs clean, He himself symbolically handled the broom to inspire his countrymen. The nation followed the leader and most of the people in the country became aware of the need of clean environment.
However, we have to go a long way in achieving hundred per cent success in this great mission. It is not a small thing to make this huge mission successful in a country of India’s vastness. We need not be discouraged by the reports of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) released by the Union Rural Development Minister, which shows J&K State performing poorly with many more States in the country. However, in regard to private toilets, J&K has secured 45. 9 per cent points according to the sample survey. This means that the people of the State have to do much more to make their environs clean.
