RAJOURI, Dec 6: A student died while 25 other passengers, including 17 students, were injured when a speeding and uncontrolled mini-bus (Canter) overturned on the road after hitting two other vehicles in Tandwal (Thandikassi) area on Rajouri- Poonch highway near here this morning.
A police spokesman said that mishap took place at around 9.10 am when a Canter bearing registration number-JK11A/3415 was on way to Rajouri from Manjakote. When it reached near Thandikassi, it went out of control due to suspected brake failure and overturned on the road after hitting two parked cars just closer to Radha Swami Ashram, Tandwal village just 3 kms from Rajouri City.
A 20-year-old student, Mohammad Wasim, son of Mohammad Ashfaq, resident of Naili village in Manjakote, died on the spot after being crushed under the vehicle, while 25 other passengers were injured. With the help of police, all the injured were evacuated from the spot and taken to GMC Associated Hospital Rajouri, where they are undergoing treatment. A few of them were discharged after treatment.
All the injured sustained multiple injuries, while 16 of them were students. They were on their way to their school or college.
Medical Superintendent of GMC Associated Hospital Rajouri, Dr Mahmood Bajar, said all the 25 injured were being treated and their condition was stable.
Deputy Commissioner, Rajouri Vikas Kundal rushed to the hospital after coming to know about the accident. He inquired about the condition of the injured students and other people and directed the Hospital authorities to provide best possible treatment to the accident victims.
The police have registered a case and seized the vehicle while a search operation has been launched to nab the absconding driver.
According to Medical Superintendent, the students injured in the road accident have been identified as Elishba Sadiq daughter of Mohammad Sadiq; Sultana Mirza, daughter of Sajjad Mirza; Mehwish Kosar, daughter of Mohammad Yunus; Shazia Kosar, daughter of Abdul Majeed; Sonia daughter of Mohammad Yunus; Mohammad Irfan, son of Mohammad Hanif; Abrar Aziz son of Abdul Aziz; Mohammad Asif, son of Aslam; Hasan Raza, son of Javed Iqbal; Danish Choudhary, son of Altaf Hussain; Mohammad Faizan, son of Mohammad Khadim; Tayba Kosar, daughter of Kabir Hussain; Sadia Riaz, daughter of Mohammad Riaz; Shagufta Kosar, daughter of Kabir Hussain, Halima Sadia, daughter of Zameer, Hussain; Abrar Ahmed, son of Mohammad Munshi and Sonia Kosar, daughter of Nisar Hussain from different villages of Manajkote.
Apart from the above students, those injured in the road accident were- Shahnawaz Ahmed, son of Bashir Ahmed; Shamim Akhtar wife of Javed Ivbal; Mohammad Arif, son of Fazal Hussain; Manoj Kumar, son of Ummi Chand; Shahnaz Begum, wife of Liaqat Ali; Mohammad Younas, son of Mohammad Hussain and Raj Kumar, son of Kasturi Lal.
The police has handed over the body of the deceased student to the family after conducting post-mortem and completing other formalities.
