SRINAGAR : A militant was killed in a fierce encounter in Machil sector in the frontier district of Kupwara, a defence ministry spokesperson said.
Lt Colonel N N Joshi told that operation was going on when the reports last came in. He said a contact was established with militants today in Machil sector, probably near the Line of Control (LoC). However, when the militants were asked to surrender, they resorted to indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.
Troops also retaliated and in the fierce encounter, a militant was killed. He said though it seems that it was an infiltration attempt, but actual picture will be clear later.
Lt Col Joshi said the operation was going on and more troops have been rushed to cordon off entire area to foil any attempt by militants to escape. (AGENCIES)
