JAMMU, Mar 9: A trans-border smuggler was nabbed by Army authorities today near the Line of Control in Balakote area of Mendhar sector of district Poonch along with two kilogram of heroin and fake currency worth Rs 10 lakhs.
Official sources said that acting on a specific information, Army personnel from 7/11 GR, intercepted a youth carrying a bag at Army check post near fencing at Basooni. He hailed from Dabbi village located on that side of the fencing and was moving towards Balakote. He planned to move to Bhimber Gali for onward journey to Rajouri.
The boy threw bag and tried to escape but he was chased and nabbed at gun point by the alert jawans. During frisking, 2 kilogram of heroin worth crores in the international market besides fake Indian currency worth Rs 10 lakhs was recovered from his possession.
Identified as 23-year-old Mohd Zaffar, son of Mohd Shabir, resident of Dabbi LoC village, the narcotic smuggler was taken into custody immediately. He was then taken to nearby Army unit and placed under sustained questioning. Later in the evening, the smuggler was handed over to the Mendhar police along with consignment .
A senior police official said that this LoC villager was believed to be in contact with the trans- smugglers from across the LoC and may be moving on that side of the LoC to collect the consignments. The ISI has been pumping huge fake currency into this side besides drugs, he maintained.
The official further said that with his arrest, some more arrests are likely to be made shortly. The police was trying to establish the destination of this consignment. The arrested smuggler has been placed under sustained interrogation. He disclosed that all the fresh currency notes recovered were in the denomination of 500 and 2000.
