SRINAGAR : Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, today left the Kashmir valley for Jammu as only one-way traffic will continue on the highway, the only road linking the valley with the rest of the country.
Meanwhile, majority of roads to far flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) were also reopened after clearance of snow.
“We have decided to allow only one-way traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway till further improvement in the weather as there is prediction of more snowfall later this week,” official sources said.
They said vehicles from Srinagar to Jammu were allowed. However, no vehicle will be allowed from Jammu to avoid any road jam or accident as there was snow on both sides of the road at several places on the highway.
Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and trucks with fruits left different parts of the valley to Jammu this morning. A large number of empty trucks and oil tankers also left for Jammu, they said.
One way traffic was resumed on December 23 after the highway remained closed for two days due to heavy snowfall at Jawahar tunnel, Banihal and Patnitop and slippery road conditions due to below freezing temperature.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the road.
Sources said majority roads, which were closed due to snowfall in north Kashmir, were also reopened after accumulated snow was cleared.
However, the highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the country, remained closed for six winter months due to heavy snowfall and slippery road conditions. (AGENCIES)
