SRINAGAR, Dec 12: Night temperatures recorded a dip at most places in Kashmir with Gulmarg being the coldest place at minus 4.4°C today while Mughal Road was re-opened today for traffic after 4 days and Srinagar-Leh is re-opening for one-way traffic tomorrow.
A Meteorological Department official said that Srinagar saw a fall by nearly two degree Celsius, recording a low of 1.6°C against 3.5°C the previous night. The temperature was 2.2°C above normal for this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 0.2°C against 2.6°C the previous night. The temperature was 0.6°C above normal for the town.
He said that Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 2.6°C against minus 5.0°C previous night and it was 0.6°C above normal for the tourist resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of 0.3°C against 1.3°C the previous night and it was 1.0°C above normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.4°C against minus 4.5°C the previous night. It was 0.7°C below normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 2.2°C against 2.4°C the previous night. It was 4.0°C above normal for the place.
Leh recorded minus 9.0°C and Kargil minus 9.8°C.
Mainly dry weather has been predicted till December 20 in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. However, brief spell of light rain or snow may occur at isolated places over higher reaches, the MeT official added.
In the meantime, Mughal Road, connecting twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri with Shopian, was thrown open for traffic after remaining closed due to snowfall on December 8.
Authorities decided to allow one-way traffic towards Srinagar from Kargil along Srinagar-Leh highway tomorrow.
“In view of frost and slippery conditions of the road, tomorrow subject to fair weather and road clearance, only one way traffic from Kargil towards Srinagar shall be allowed on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road,” an official said.
“All these vehicles shall be allowed from Minamarg at 1000 hrs, LMVs followed by HMVs up to 1300 hrs, and Motorists are advised to carry an anti-skid chain to gain more grip on the slippery road.”
“No vehicles shall be allowed without anti-skid chains. Security forces shall follow the same schedule. No vehicle shall be allowed before and after cutting off timings.”
