One year imprisonment awarded to driver

KATHUA, Nov 11: Judicial Magistrate Renu Dogra today awarded one year imprisonment and fine of Rs 2000 to a driver under Section 304-A, 337 and 279 RPC.
The accused identified as Surjeet Singh, son of Arjun Singh of Brila Khurd, tehsil and district Gurdaspur, Punjab, was facing trial in death case due to rash and negligent driving.
As per case, Police Station Lakhanpur received an information on June 17, 2007 that a truck bearing registration number PB06C-2775 being driven by Surjeet Singh while coming from Jammu towards Pathankot in very rash and negligent manner hit a scooter bearing registration number PB35B-5513, which resulted into death of scooterist who was identified as Ashok Kumar.
After the completion of the investigation challan was presented in the Court of Law. JMIC after hearing the senior Prosecuting Officer RP Singh appearing for the State and Learned Counsel observed that the accused was proved guilty and liable to be convicted.
Court awarded imprisonment of one year and fine of Rs 2000 for commission of offence under Section 304-A RPC, simple imprisonment for one month and fine Rs 500 for commission of offence under Section 337 RPC and simple imprisonment for two months and fine of Rs 1000 for the commission of offence under Section 279 RPC to the accused.
