Only light vehicles to ply from Srinagar to Jammu

SRINAGAR: Only light vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu from this afternoon on the highway linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country. Due to repairing of the highway at some places, which were damaged due to landslides recently, only light vehicles will be allowed from Srinagar to Jammu after 1200 hrs, a traffic police official told here today. He said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, are repairing the damaged portion of the highway due to which no vehicles were being allowed a since this morning.
He said only light vehicles will be allowed to move towards Jammu. However, vehicles will be allowed from 1200 hrs till 1700 hrs to cross Qazigund. No vehicle will be allowed from Jammu to Srinagar as only one-way traffic will continue till further orders. Meanwhile, official sources said hundreds of vehicles were stranded at different places from Anantnag to Qazigund on the highway.
Drivers and passengers alleged that no proper announcement was made regarding the repair of the highway. Long queues of trucks, mostly empty and oil tankers, were also stranded on the highway, waiting for a green signal to move towards Jammu.
The highway, the only road connecting the valley with rest of the country, suffered massive damage due to snowfall and landslides, triggered by heavy rain in Ramban, Ramsu, Shaitan Nallah and Udhampur.
The highway remained closed for most period of this month due to landslides.
