POONCH, Oct 23: Stressing the Government to take effective steps for imparting education to girl children of Gujjars and Bakerwals living in far-flung areas and hilly belt of the State, prominent Gujjar leader and scholar Shamsher Hakla Poonchi today demanded opening of boarding schools for them in towns and cities.
Addressing a meeting of the community members here today he said the literacy rate among Gujjar and Bakerwal women is very low and concerted efforts need to be taken in this regard by the Government. He said the Beti Bachao – and Beti Padao slogan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi be implemented in letter and spirit in Gujjar and Bakerwal Bastis as even after 70 years of independence majority of the women folk among the community have been deprived of this facility due to lack of proper arrangements of schooling in their localities.
Hakla while stressing on opening of mobile schools for nomadic gujjars also demanded opening of more Gujjar hostels in the State.
He also made an appeal to women Commission in the State to take steps for the betterment and welfare of Gujjar women and destitutes.
