Opening of liquor shop triggers protest

RAMBAN, Aug 1: Locals here today staged a protest demonstration and blocked Ramban-Gool road for four hours at Maitra to express resentment against the opening of a liquor shop in residential areas and close to a school and religious places.
The protesters raised slogans demanding immediate closure of the liquor shop claiming that it may vitiate the atmosphere of the area and can spoil the youth.
“On one hand the government is organizing awareness camps to curtail drug addiction while on the other the Excise Department is deliberately permitting some businessmen to open liquor shops,” the protesters claimed.
Later on Tehsildar Ramban, Deep Kumar and Dy. SP Headquarters Ramban, Om Parkash and other officers from Police and civil administration reached the spot and after hectic deliberations pacified the protesters assuring that all the liquor stocks kept in the shop was shifted to some other place.
After assurance from the officers, the protesters lifted the road block.
