Opening Siachen Glacier will immensely help Ladakh tourism: LAHDC

LEH, Oct 25: On behalf of LAHDC Leh, the Deputy Chairman LAHDC, Leh Tsering Sandup who also holds the portfolio of Tourism, said that the Central Government’s announcement of opening Siachen Glacier for tourists, will immensely benefit tourism industry in Ladakh.
It is to mention here that, in a significant decision, Ministry of Defence, Rajnath Singh on October 21 announced that Siachen Glacier, world’s highest battled field located at the height of about 18,600 feet from the sea level in Ladakh sector, which will become a Union Territory on October 31, is now open to the tourists from the base camp up to Kumar Post.
Dy Chairman Sandup, in a statement, said that the present Council had been trying hard and persuading the case continuously at different levels since long to open Siachen belt for tourists. He expressed great happiness on declaring Siachen Glacier open for tourists and said that this historic and path breaking decision of Government will immensely benefit tourism industry of Ladakh in general and Nubra valley in particular. He further added that potential of adventure tourism in Siachen belt could now be explored benefiting unemployed youths of Nubra region at large.
Meanwhile, Sandup also expressed concern over the possibility of overexploitation of this fragile glacier area and acknowledged that now it is the responsibility of Hill Council to formulate a sustainable roadmap for regulating tourism in this highest battled field.
