Opposing reservations means, opposing equality: Javaid Rahi

JAMMU, Oct 31: The people who are opposing reservations are in essence and opposing equality within society.
This was stated by noted Tribal Researcher Dr. Javaid Rahi.
Addressing the tribal youth in a function held here today, Dr Rahi said, “The ‘Reservation’ granted to backward sections including Gujjars-Bakkarwals community in Jammu and Kashmir under Scheduled Tribe category in Jammu and Kashmir, is rooted in social justice and parity, not charity.”
“Reservation is a constitutional guarantee which provides equitable opportunities to historically discriminated communities. This system serves as a bridge to level the playing field for communities that have faced systemic exclusion and underrepresentation over generations,” he said.
He said, “This reservation is a means of combating backwardness in socially and educationally marginalized communities, including Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, whose presence in key services and institutions remains limited.”
Dr. Rahi urged the youth to take pride in their tribal identity and status but not to limit themselves to reservations alone.
“Gujjars and other tribals now have the opportunity to shape their identity as a dynamic and integral force within India. Think beyond quotas and seek opportunities in the private sector and explore prospects outside the country. We must work towards success beyond reserved seats and job quotas and to prove our competence on every front.” he added.
Dr. Rahi encouraged the younger generation of tribals to strive for excellence across all spheres without relying solely on quotas.
