JAMMU, Aug 3: An organ donation awareness programme on the occasion of “13th Indian Organ Donation Day” as a part of “Angdaan Mahotsav” was organized today at State Cancer Institute (SCI) Jammu by the J&K State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) in collaboration with SCI Jammu.
The Programme was held to spread information on Cadaveric Organ Donation and to highlight the contribution of medical professionals working in the field of organ donation and transplantation and to eliminate various myths regarding organ donation from society.
Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu was the chief guest on occasion. He said that 13th Organ Donation Day is an opportunity to motivate people to donate organs in order to bridge the existing huge gap between the demand and availability of human organs. He encouraged others to come forward to pledge for this noble cause. He assured full support for starting Deceased/Cadaveric Donation in GMC Jammu as a service to the people.
Dr Sanjeev Puri, Joint Director, SOTTO J&K in his keynote address said that every donated organ is precious, lifesaving and a national resource. A person after his death can give new life to up to 8 people by donating vital organs like Kidney, Liver, Lung, Heart, Pancreas and Intestine and improve quality life of many more by donating tissues like cornea, skin, bone and heart valve etc.
The vote of thanks was presented by Dr Deepak Kumar, Deputy Medical Superintendent, SCI. The event was attended by Dr Kulbhushan Gupta (HoD Radio-Diagnosis), Ashwini Khajuria (Administrator AHs, GMC-J), Dr Arun Sharma (Medical Superintendent, MCH Gandhi Nagar), Dr Sanjogita Soodan (Deputy MS, Super Specialty Hospital Jammu), Dr Raju Bhandari (Consultant Nephrology), faculty, paramedical and nursing staff and other senior officials from SCI.
The Event was managed by Anshu Sharma (Media Consultant), Irfan Ahmed (Transplant Coordinator), Nisha Kumari (Programme Assistant), besides Ashok Singh and Ashwani Kumar from J&K SOTTO.
