‘Ex-servicemen can be roped in fight against terror’

JAMMU, Jan 14: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today said the neighbor (a reference towards Pakistan) can’t digest peace and economic progress in Jammu and Kashmir and was making attempts to create trouble but declared that security forces in coordination with each other will thwart the attempts.

Reiterating that terrorism is taking last breath, he advocated the participation of retired soldiers, officers and policemen in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
Addressing a function here after interaction with the veterans, Veer Naris and next of kin of martyr soldiers, Sinha said there has been huge influx of tourists in Jammu and Kashmir but the neighbor (Pakistan) can’t digest peace and economic progress in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Therefore, the neighbor was making attempts to fan trouble but our security forces in close coordination with each other will thwart all such designs,’’ he added.
Asserting that Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed major changes during last four years, the Lieutenant Governor said the ex-servicemen have also worked a lot to achieve this.
“In the recent security review meeting, I advocated that ex-servicemen including officers, soldiers and policemen should be roped in for the decisive fight against the terrorism,’’ he added.
Sinha announced that the Jammu and Kashmir administration will give land in Kashmir and Jammu for the construction of Sainik Colonies to accommodate families of fallen heroes.
He said that Rs 25 lakh ex-gratia for the families of fallen soldiers was too less and he will ensure that the amount is raised this year only.
The Lieutenant Governor said that 4 Crore tourists visited the UT in the past two years. While 1.88 Crore tourists visited J&K in 2022, 2.12 crore tourists arrive in 2023. There is a peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the J&K.
“The nation will forever remain indebted to our soldiers who are safeguarding the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country. Welfare of the ex-servicemen is the top priority of the administration,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
He added that the police, Army, and Central Para Military Forces (CAPFs) are working in complete coordination.
“Our Armed Forces are guarding borders of the country and it is because of them that the people live peacefully in their houses. They work 24 hours to keep the country and its people safe,’’ Sinha said.
He appealed to all citizens to generously contribute towards the welfare of ex-servicemen and ‘Veer Naris’.
“It is our collective responsibility and our foremost duty to ensure that our veterans and the families of our martyrs live a life of dignity,” he said.
The Lieutenant Governor also honoured the Veer Naris on the occasion.
Lt Gen RK Sharma (Retd), Dr Mandeep Kumar Bhandari, Principal Secretary to Lieutenant Governor, Brig Gurmeet Singh Shan (Retd), Director Sainik Welfare Department, Brig Anil Gupta (Retd) and officials of Sainik Welfare Department were also present at the function.
Sinha paid tribute to the brave martyrs and interacted with veterans, Veer Naris and next of kin of bravehearts of Armed Forces at the Raj Bhawan on the occasion of Armed Forces Veterans’ Day.
