Pak poll verdict good for peace process: Mufti

SAMBA, May 19: Observing that the decisive electoral verdict in Pakistan is bound to yield rich dividends for both the neighbouring countries, patron of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today hoped that the Indo-Pak peace process would gain pace as the designated Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharief has been an ardent supporter of improvement of relations with India.
Addressing one-day convention of party workers of Samba Assembly segment here today, Mufti said that strengthening of democracy in Pakistan has provided an opportunity to take some bold initiatives for the resolution of all issues including the vexed Kashmir problem.
“Decisive verdict given by Pakistani voters to Nawaz Sharief is very positive and encouraging development for restoring lasting peace in this region”, he said and recalled that during his earlier tenures Nawaz Sharief had initiated many bold steps to normalize relations with India. He especially mentioned that the historic Lahore bus service was started when Sharief was Prime Minister of Pakistan and he (Sharief) had always emphasised on the continuity of the peace talks so that the outstanding issues could be resolved amicable.
“PDP has continuously been mentioning towards emergence of strong civil society and democratic forces in Pakistan”, he said and pointed out that outcome of recently held election in the neighbouring country has authenticated PDP’s observation about Pakistan.
“The brighter side of Pakistan’s experience with the democratic system is that, unlike in many other countries, voters in huge numbers have displayed tremendous courage and commitment by defying serious threat to their lives and turning out to vote, for a decisive change”, he said and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s reaction to Pakistan elections was also a very positive sign of normalizing relations.
“Strengthening of democratic institutions and emergence of a strong civil society in Pakistan which has taken a tough stand against military dictatorship as well as against terrorism is a positive sign and our country has to utilize this opportunity to solve the Kashmir issue once for all”, he said.
Highlighting steps taken for the development of Samba during his tenure as Chief Minister, Mufti said that it was all due to efforts of his Government that huge investors from different parts of the country made investment in Samba.
“Today Samba is one of the biggest industrial centre of the State and credit for this goes of PDP-Congress Government”, he said and further reminded that gathering that it was during PDP-Congress regime that Degree College was opened in Samba.
Sardar Rangil Singh, Trilok Singh Bajwa, Yashpal Sharma, MLC, Dr Sameer Koul, Ved Mahajan, Daman Bhasin, Falail Singh were among those who spoke on the occasion.
