SRINAGAR, Oct 26: Army today said that Pakistan was trying to disrupt peace and harmony in Kashmir while putting on the facade of ceasefire as security forces foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of North Kashmir.
Police said that it along with Army foiled an infiltration bid in Sudhpora along the LoC in Karnah area by neutralising a militant of the LeT.
A statement of the police said that at about 0100hrs, based on specific input about possible attempts of infiltration, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by police and Army in Sudhpora area of Karnah Kupwara.
“During the search operation, an infiltrator was challenged by the joint party who started firing indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” he said.
In the ensuing encounter, one militant of the LeT was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. He was identified as Mohammad Shakoor son of Mohammad Yaqoob resident of Syedpora Leepa of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoJK).
“Incriminating materials and arms, ammunition including one AK-47 rifle, two AK-47 magazines, one pistol, two pistol magazines, 9 mm 45 rounds, two Chinese grenades, Pakistani currency and Identity Card have been recovered from his possession,” the spokesman said.
A Defence spokesman said that a number of inputs pertaining to possible infiltration by a group of militants through Sudpura were received by the security forces.
“Based on the above inputs the area was kept under constant surveillance. Timely action and close coordination between Indian Army, police and other intelligence agencies led to foiling of the infiltration attempt and potential threat to peace in hinterland,” he said.
“Continued engagements along the Line of Control are uncanny reminders of efforts by Pakistan to infuse (militancy) in Kashmir and disrupt peace and harmony while putting on the facade of ceasefire understanding,” the spokesman said.
“Youth in Pakistan, he said, are being used as cannon fodder by Pakistan state policy from the last three decades with a fruitless aim to constantly disrupt progress towards collective peace.
In the meantime, an Army trooper was injured after a gunfight broke out between militants and security forces in Sheeri Chandoosa area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district today.
A police official said that contact was established during cordon and search operation launched by police and Army in Sultanpura forests.
“In the initial exchange of fire one Army trooper received bullet wound in leg, has been shifted to nearby hospital for treatment,” he said.
