The Union Cabinet has approved sanction to Rs. 8112.12 crore Pakal Dul hydroelectric project in J&K expected to generate 4×250 MW of electricity to reduce power shortage not only in J&K but in the entire northern region. The project will be undertaken by the state run NHPC utilizing storage provisions of the Indus Water Treaty. The project is scheduled to be completed in 66 months. There are many other facilities granted by the cabinet to facilitate the state improve its power position.
This is a landmark decision by the Narendra Modi Government and we are happy that the importance of abundant electric power to the state is being understood and attempted at. We have always said that regular power supply is the key to eradication of poverty and unemployment in the State. There is another power project before the cabinet for the State and hopefully that also will be undertaken in due course of time. The good thing is that the new Government in Delhi is fully cognizant of the importance and relevance of power generating projects in the State that would supply power even outside the state as well. We hope that the time schedule fixed for the Pakal Dul project will be adhered to in any case.
