Pakistan empowers women to enhance community resilience amid climate change challenges

Islamabad, Aug 7: Romina Khurshid Alam, coordinator to the Pakistani prime minister on climate change and environmental coordination, has said the country has been focusing on empowering women to enhance community resilience amid climate change challenges.
As the world grapples with increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters, women have a role to play in disaster risk reduction, and their unique contributions are essential for building resilient communities and ensuring effective disaster preparedness, Alam said while addressing a seminar on disaster risk reduction.
She said that the Government is highly concerned about the suffering of communities frequently affected by climate change-caused disasters, especially marginalized communities with poor resources for post-disaster recovery.
Women serve as the backbone of their communities, particularly during disasters, including floods, cyclones and heat waves, she said, adding that the women are being empowered with knowledge, technical and financial resources through various initiatives so that they can play a central role in managing household preparedness, disseminating risk information and providing critical support systems.
“Empowering women in disaster risk reduction efforts can lead to innovative solutions and more responsive policies. Their involvement in disaster risk reduction initiatives could also enhance community resilience and ensure that disaster management strategies are both inclusive and effective,” Alam said.
