Pakistan plans to set up world-class mountaineering school

Islamabad, July 22: Romina Khurshid Alam, coordinator to the Pakistani prime minister on climate change and environmental coordination, said that the country plans to set up a world-class mountaineering school in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.

Chairing a meeting here, she said the school would have structured training and educational facilities specifically tailored to mountaineering, sherpa training, and sustainable tourism practices in Pakistan’s north to promote world-class, environmental-friendly mountaineering, climbing and mountain tourism, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination said in a statement on Sunday.

Establishing such facilities would help equip aspirant mountaineers and mountain climbers with the knowledge and confidence to enjoy the mountains safely while respecting the local environment, values and cultures of mountain communities and fellow climbers, Alam said.

The official noted that a plan is being implemented to set up the government-run mountaineering school of the world-class standard in the Skardu district of the region.

“It also aims to open new vistas of employment opportunities for the local mountain communities and help promote sustainable and environment-friendly mountaineering and climbing,” according to the coordinator.
