Pakistani national handed over 7-year jail term for spying

JAIPUR, Jun 9: A court here sentenced a Pakistani national to seven years imprisonment after holding him guilty of spying for the neighbouring country.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate also convicted and sentenced two Indians, including a woman, to four years in jail yesterday for helping the foreign national in carrying out espionage activities.

All of them were convicted under Official Secrets Act- 1923.

The Pakistani national, Jahid Ali, was arrested in 2005 for espionage in Jodhpur. He was caught sending information related with defence installations and others to Pakistan-based his handlers.

After his interrogation, two locals of Jodhpur– Mohammad Ali and Ritu Chaudhary– were also arrested for helping him in getting accommodation and other facilities in Jodhpur.

Co-accused Ali and Chaudhary were also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 by the court.

While Jahid was already in judicial custody, Ali and Chaudhary were sent to the jail after the judgement, according to a release by police. (PTI)
