Pakistani singer Nayyara Noor passes away

Islamabad, August 21: Renowned Pakistani singer Nayyara Noor passed away after brief illness in Karachi at the age of 71, her family said on Sunday.
The nature of her illness was not immediately known.
Noor was born on November 3, 1950, in Assam. Her family had migrated to Pakistan when she was seven-years-old.
She started learning music at a very young age and received her first break on Radio Pakistan in 1968. Noor did not get any formal training in music. She was considered one of the leading playback singers in Pakistan.
She is survived by her husband, Sheharyar Zaidi, and two sons.
In 2006, she was honoured with the Pride of Performance Award. She stopped singing in 2012.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed grief over Nayyara’s demise.
“Her death is ‘an irreparable loss’ to the music world. Be it a ‘ghazal’ or a song, Nayyara Noor sang with perfection,” Shahbaz Sharif said in a tweet.
