SRINAGAR, Jan 30: The Panchayat members of some areas of Ganderbal district today threatened to resign enmass if the promises made with them are not fulfilled by February 15.
Panchayat members and locals of Haran area of Ganderbal staged protests at Residency Road in Srinagar against the Government for its failure to utilize developmental funds in the area.
“We live a miserable life as the successive governments have failed to provide basic facilities to us. The electric wire and poles are in pathetic condition, work on road has not been completed despite passing of a decade,” one of the Panches Bashir Ahmad Lone, told Excelsior.
The agitated Panches told said that the Government has made them scapegoats before the general public because of their failure to work for the development of the area. They said that on one side, Government announces schemes and projects for the people through Panchayati institution, but on the ground these don’t exist.
The angry Panchayati members said that not a single penny was spent in Haran Halqa from the allotted constituency fund.
The Panchayat members said that government claims that they have transferred power of 14 departments to Panchayats but on the ground officers of these departments are not interested fulfil their demands.
They alleged that officers of their Halqa have distributed lacs of money meant for poor people under government sponsored scheme Indra Awaz Yojna (IAY) among their relatives.
The Panches also said that lakhs of rupees meant for poor people are misused by these vested interests. “Social welfare schemes, MGNREGA and other funds are used for personal purposes by these people and we not only are constantly ignored, but threatened if we raise voice against them,” Ghulam Ahmad, a Panch said.
