SRINAGAR, July 20: A Panchayat in the Gogaldara village of Tangmarg area in Baramulla district passed a resolution according to which tax would be levied on the timber being extracted by the Forest Department and the State Forest Corporation (SFC) in the village.
The decision was taken in a Gram Sabha meeting held under the chairmanship of village Sarpanch Mohammad Maqbool. The participants of the meeting said that the Forest Department and SFC are earning crores from the timber which is being extracted from the village. They said the villagers don’t get even few hundred feet of timber for construction of houses and people are forced to cut down green trees.
“The State Government through Forest Department and State Forest Corporation (SFC) earns millions of rupees as revenue annually from the timber. They are taking the share of one of the most important natural resources of this village but in turn the villagers get nothing. The resolution is aimed at securing the interests of the people living in the village,” said Mohammad Maqbool while sharing his views during the meeting.
The Gram Sabha also unanimously passed some other resolutions. These include establishment of Primary Health Centre, Agriculture Zone, Sheep Husbandry Centre and Animal Husbandry centre in the village.
