SRINAGAR: The Government has constituted a panel which will work out modalities for giving awards to outstanding sportspersons of the State.
Minister for Roads and Buildings and Floriculture, Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari on behalf of the Minister for Technical Education, Youth Services and Sports today informed the Legislative Assembly that the department has received a proposal from J&K State Sports Council, for special package for Chain Singh a resident of district Doda, currently working as Naib Subedar in Indian Army, who has donned colours at National and International level.
Apart from his credible performance in the National level competitions in shooting discipline, Chain Singh has represented the country in number of prestigious ‘International Level Shooting’ competitions right from 2009 with glittering performance.
Replying to the calling attention notice by Rajiv Jasrotia in the Assembly here today, the Minister said Chain Singh has not only kept the State flag high at National level but also brought laurels to the country at the international level.
He said during the year 2014, Singh has represented country in 7th Asian Championship at Kuwait and earned one gold and one bronze medal in individual 10 Meter Rifle and team event category respectively.
He said consequent upon his outstanding performance, Mr Singh represented country in 17th Asian Games held at Incheon (South Korea) from September 19 to October 2, 2014 and clinched bronze medal in 50 meter Rifle event.
The Minister informed the House that this is the highest record of medal won by State subject ever in the Asian Games in shooting discipline. It is the proactive in other states to honour medalists with suitable cash awards in recognition of their outstanding performance in sports and motivate them to perform better.
He said as a sample Haryana State has in vogue the cash prize of Rs 10 lakh for gold, Rs seven lakh for silver and Rs five lakh for bronze medals earned in Asian Games, there is no such cash incentive scheme for International medalist in J&K State.
He further said that 24 MLAs and MLCs of J&K have recommended that the Chief Minister should announce a special package to this outstanding sportsperson for his exceptional achievement in sports so that he will continue to strive for taking part in future international level competitions. (AGENCIES)
