NEW DELHI: A Bill that seeks to lower the age of juveniles accused in rape cases and other heinous offences was today passed by Parliament with the Rajya Sabha approving it by a voice vote.

The Bill seeks to lower the age of juvenile accused from 18 to 16 years to ensure that juvenile convicts of horrendous rape do not walk free getting paltry sentence, as had happened in the December 16 Nirbhaya incident.

The Bill has already been passed in the Lok Sabha.

The passage of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2015, came after the House rejected by voice vote an amendment moved by Mr M V Rajeev Gowda of the Congress.

The CPI-M, however, walked out on rejection of its demand to send the Bill to the Select Committee. (Agencies)
