Parts of Srinagar without drinking water supply

Srinagar, Jan 13: Drinking water supply today took a hit in dozens of Srinagar areas after a major water supply pipeline providing water in most of the areas was damaged in Soura area of Srinagar.
The damage to the water supply pipeline only added to the miseries of residents of these areas who were already grappling with the over-night snowfall early in the morning.
The drinking water supply was snapped in the areas like Soura, Eidgah, Safakadal, Sekidafar, Noorbagh, Qamerwari including many other Srinagar areas.
The locals in the area told Excelsior that in the morning when they woke up, they found that the taps were running dry. “Initially we thought that it was due to the cold, but then we found out that there were some issues with the pipeline,” a resident said.
The residents were subjected to hardships early in the morning amid a thick layer of snow that had accumulated overnight as they had to arrange drinking water for the use throughout the day.
“It was a torture early in the morning as we had to arrange the drinking water from the nearby taps; people were not informed through any means about the damage to the pipeline and the subsequent arrangement to deal with the crisis,” said Muhammad Amin, a resident from SafaKadal.
Confirming the fault in the pipeline, Chief Engineer, PHE Abdul Waheed told Excelsior that there were some leakage issues in the pipeline and that the fault will be rectified soon.”We are aware of the hardships being faced by people, we are on the job and by the evening, the issue will be rectified,” he said.
Pertinent to mention here, the water supply coming down from Ganderbal-which stands damaged as of now-is already coping up with some technical faults due to which the pressure in the water pipe has declined considerably.
The decrease in the pressure-which has now been there for last more than one month-has already affected the reach out of the drinking water supply in Srinagar areas, with officials saying that the work to correct the fault was on.
“By March the work on that issue will be completed and the issue will be rectified; there is no dearth of funds and we are on it,” another official said.
