JAMMU, Feb 14: JKPCC president Ghulam Ahmed Mir has questioned the decision of the Government to hold elections to the vacant seats to the 1st tier of Panchayats on party basis, whereas, elections to basic units were conducted on non-party basis.
In a press statement today Mir said that the Government conducted the elections to the Sarpanchs and Panchs levels (1st Tier) on non-party basis last year but it is most strange that those vacancies which remained unfilled due to non-availability of candidates and those which arose due to VDC elections are being now filled on party basis.
He said that in many Panchayats half of the Panchs and Sarpanchs would be independents, having being elected on non-party basis, whereas those being filled now be on party basis without the participation of all major opposition parties.
Mir said that this makes the entire exercise of Government quit surprising which is a deliberate attempt to keep the opposition away from the electoral exercise, as no effort in the direction of creating conducive atmosphere for a meaningful exercise have been conducted by the Government.
