KATRA, Dec 23: Doctors at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super-Speciality Hospital, successfully operated a 50-year-old patient suffering from adhesive capsulitis stage 4, commonly known as frozen shoulder and helped the patient regain his shoulder movement.
The doctors saved the patient from misery by using an arthroscopic (keyhole) technique. The team of doctors was led by Dr Manish Varshney, Senior consultant Orthopedics, SMVDN Super-Speciality Hospital.
Hailing from Jammu, the patient was bought to the hospital with progressive shoulder pain and gradual reduction of movement of the shoulder. The patient was suffering from this condition for the past 8 months. Pain and reduced shoulder movement was interfering in patient’s daily life and he was having difficulty in carrying out the daily chores.
Elaborating about the case, Dr Manish Varshney said, “When the patient visited us, he was in tremendous pain and was unable to make any shoulder movements. We immediately conducted a few tests and the diagnosis further revealed that he was suffering from adhesive capsulitis stage 4, also known as frozen shoulder. We then advised him to undergo arthroscopic shoulder surgery, which is conducted by making a small incision on the skin and a tiny camera called arthroscope is used to identify and diagnose the exact nature of the disease”.
“The surgery was successfully performed under anesthesia and completed within 20 minutes,” he said, adding, the patient regained full movements of the shoulder on the same day and was allowed to carry out all activities from the operated limb without any need of post-operative rest or immobilization.
Dr Varshney said ‘frozen shoulder’ is a condition that is treatable but often neglected due to lack of access to expert arthroscopy services. The treatment takes just one to two stitches and less than half an hour of surgical time with immediate regain of movements requiring no rest after surgery, he added.
“Equipped with a team of expert doctors and facilities, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super-Speciality have been routinely performing reconstructive arthroscopic surgeries to improve orthopedic care,” he asserted.
