Pawar asks women cadre to participate in Panchayat polls

JAMMU, Dec 3: President of Pradesh Mahila Congress and former MLA Indu Pawar today called upon women to actively participate in the ongoing Panchayat elections in the State.
She expressed satisfaction that in the just concluded five phases of the Panchayat elections participations of women folk was encouraging.
Addressing a meeting of the Mahila Congress workers at Jammu in connection with the Panchayat elections she said that women participation was encouraging and many highly qualified women have been elected as Panchayat members. She further added that in most of the seats reserved for women, qualified ladies have emerged victorious from these seats.
Pawar informed the gathering that it was all due to Congress party that Panchayati Raj Institutions have been strengthened in the country. She said that Congress is committed to decentralize power at the grass root level. She made it a point to recall revolutionary 73rd and 74th amendments of the Indian Constitution which were made by the then Prime Minister late Rajeev Gandhi to make local self Governments vibrant and effective. She further recalled that it was all due to the efforts of the Congress Party that some revolutionary changes were made in J&K Panchayati Raj Act.
She called upon the party workers to educate masses, especially women about role being played by Congress in ensuring equal share for women in the power. Mahila Congress president said that though ongoing Panchayat elections are being held on non- party basis, many Congress supported candidates have emerged victorious in the elections.
She said defeat of majority of BJP sponsored candidates in the Panchayat elections is an indication of people’s anger, especially in rural areas, against BJP.
Mahila Congress president exhorted the workers to start work for Lok Sabha elections which will be followed by Panchayat polls. She said people are annoyed with anti-poor policies of the BJP led-NDA Government at the Centre. Anita Sharma, Pooja Devi, Kanchan and Anu also spoke on the occasion.
