On 14 January, Indian will be celebrating its 9th Armed Forces Veterans Day dedicated to our esteemed veterans, a solemn occasion to honor the sacrifices, selfless service and dedication of our Armed Forces personnel who retire after serving the country, giving invaluable contributions and the best parts of their lives for the country’s sovereignty.
Going back into history, Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, had formally retired from service on 14 January in 1953 and that’s how this date was chosen. The Field Marshal is a revered figure in Indian Military history, known for his leadership during the early years of India’s independence and for laying the foundation of a professional Indian Army.
Veterans Day
Since its inception in 2015, the day has gained prominence, with various events and ceremonies organized across the country to pay homage to the retired personnel of the Indian Armed Forces. Honoring veterans inspires young citizens to appreciate national service and explore careers in the armed forces. It promotes national unity and patriotism by showcasing the vital contributions of veterans in protecting the nation’s sovereignty. Additionally, it highlights the importance of addressing the welfare of veterans and their families, including matters such as pensions, healthcare, and rehabilitation. This day also serves as a moment to acknowledge and honor the sacrifices made by Armed Forces personnel, including those who have served in wars and counter-terrorism operations.
Veterans Day serves as a platform to recount the stories of valor and bravery that have defined India’s Armed Forces and highlights the nation’s gratitude. The day also serves to educate the public about the role and challenges faced by military personnel during and after their service helping bridge the gap between civilians and the Armed Forces.
Many welfare programs for veterans are launched or emphasized on this day. These initiatives aim to address their socio-economic and medical needs, ensuring they lead dignified lives post-retirement.
The 9th Veterans Day is being celebrated across the country by the three services HQs at 9 different cities including the one main event presided over by the Raksha Mantri which is going to be in Jammu region. HQ Northern Command under the leadership of Lt Gen M.V. Suchendra, Army Commander, would be conducting this mega event at Tanda Helipad, Akhnoor from 9 am onwards on 14 Jan 2025. The key areas going to be addressed will include “Resolution of Pension Anomalies”, “Grievance Redressal”, “Welfare Schemes”, “Ayurveda Medical & Dental Camp”, “Job Opportunities and Educational and Scholarship Opportunities”. This enables Veterans to connect with fellow veterans, gain knowledge on various schemes and initiatives and get first hand assistance on grievances redressals and pension related issues. “We For Veterans” anthem, an ode to our veterans will be played as a reminder of the valour and sacrifices of our brave hearts. The regions of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh hold a special place in India’s military narrative. Veterans from these regions have made monumental contributions to the security and sovereignty of the nation, and their legacy continues to inspire generations.
The people of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh have a long-standing tradition of military service, with many families having multiple generations serving in the Armed Forces. The veterans from Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh have played critical roles in various military operations, including the Indo-Pak wars of 1947-48, 1965, 1971, and the Kargil War of 1999. The bravery displayed by soldiers from these regions has been instrumental in securing India’s borders and ensuring peace in some of the most challenging terrains in the world. The ongoing anti terrorism operations in J&K is a testimony of the grit & resolve of our Armed Forces personnel. Their commitment to the nation’s defense reflects a deep sense of pride and patriotism, even in the face of adversities posed by the region’s unique geographical and political challenges.
Retired personnel often take on leadership roles within their communities, promoting education, discipline, and patriotism among the youth. Veterans from these areas are also at the forefront of disaster response initiatives, using their training and experience to assist during natural calamities. Many veterans from these regions continue to contribute to the nation’s defense by advising on strategic and tactical matters, particularly concerning the rugged and sensitive border areas.
JK&L’s military history is adorned with the exceptional leadership of numerous commanders who have left an indelible mark on the nation’s sovereignty and security. Some of these prominent leaders include Lieutenant General Zorawar “Zoru” Chand Bakshi, PVSM, MVC, VrC, VSM, known as one of the most decorated Generals in Indian Military history, he served with distinction in several wars, including the 1947-48 Kashmir conflict, the 1965 war, and the 1971 war. His bravery and tactical brilliance earned him widespread admiration. Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamwal, MVC also remembered as the Saviour of Kashmir. He and his small contingent of about 100 men successfully delayed the advance of a 6000 strong force of Pakistani tribal raiders near Uri for several days, and he sacrificed his life while defending Kashmir against Pakistan invaders in 1947 during the First Kashmir War.
We also have from J&K, living legend Captain Bana Singh, Param Vir Chakra awardee and also four Ashok Chakra awardees namely Nb Sub Chuni Lal, AC, Vr C, SM, Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani, AC, SM & Bar, Subedar Surender Singh, AC and Captain Arun Singh Jasrotia, AC, SM. Colonel Sonam Wangchuk from Ladakh also played a crucial role during the Kargil War by leading his troops to secure the strategic Chorbat La pass. He was awarded the Mahavir Chakra and he remains a symbol of valor and dedication. Apart from him there are over 50 soldiers from J&K and Ladakh who made the supreme sacrifice during Kargil War.
The J&K also has the distinction of producing a Naval Chief, Adm Arun Prakash, PVSM, AVSM, VC, VSM and two Army Chiefs i.e. General Nimal Vij, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM & General Bikram Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM.
Veterans Day is a day to express gratitude, support their welfare, and draw inspiration from their service. By honoring veterans, the nation reinforces its commitment to its defenders and ensures that their legacy continues to inspire future generations. As India observes Veterans Day each year on 14 January, it stands united in saluting those who have dedicated their lives to the service of the motherland.
