PC Chairman appoints committee on min qualification for journos

HYDERABAD, Apr 5:
Press Council of India (PCI) Chairman Justice Markandey Katju today announced a sub-committee to suggest the Union Government for ensuring economic training and minimum qualification for journalists.
The six-member committee would be headed by Nai Dunia  Hindi Daily Chief Editor Shravan Garg which will go into all aspects before submitting a report to the PIC,Justice Katju told reporters after the inquiry committee conducted hearing on 19 complaints filed by the press against the authorities and also individual/ institutions against the press at Jubilee Hall here.
He said when any professional field was in undeveloped  state there was no need of a formal training.
Earlier, in 18th century when there were no medical  colleges in Europe and if one had to become a doctor, he/she would see how other doctors were working, he said and added in the same way in India there was no formal training or qualification for scribes.
Mr Katju said though the medical science was developed in India, and one had to become a doctor he/she ought to go to a medical college for pursuing medical studies.
The lawyer or Chartered Accounts also need a proper  training and qualification, the former Supreme Court Judge said, adding Journalism was a developed profession and needed formal training and qualification.
The PCI Chairman pointed out hundreds of great journalists were there who didn’t have any formal training or qualification but they were flourishing in the media field.
Justice Katju said journalism was a developed field and  time has come to give training to journalists in the fields of business, magazines and also agriculture, labour which were the special fields in journalism.
He said Mr Shravan Garg will submit a report to the PCI and later the report will be examined and accepted with some amendments before sending to the Centre. (UNI)
