PCBs 3-year ban harsh, Umar to challenge decision says Kamran

LAHORE: Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal will definitely challenge the three-year ban on him for failing to report spot-fixing offers, his elder brother Kamran stood by him saying the PCB was very harsh while announcing the punishment.

Kamran expressed surprise over the outcome of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) hearing, held in Lahore on Monday.

“I am definitely surprised at the harsh punishment given to Umar. A three- year ban is very harsh. He will definitely approach every available forum to appeal against this ban,” Kamran told reporters in Karachi last night.

Akmal was referring to Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Nawaz, who were banned for short periods after not reporting approaches made to them.

Kamran said Umar would definitely consider hiring a legal counsel to file his appeal on the available forums.

The 29-year-old cricketer, who was provisional suspended in February this year, was found in breach of Pakistan Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Code.

Akmal was also barred from playing for his franchise Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League opening match during the 2020 edition.

His last appearance came in October 2019 during a home T20 series against Sri Lanka. From his 16 Tests, 121 ODIs and 84 T20s, the batsman has 1003, 3194 and 1690 runs to his credit.
