JAMMU, Sept 26:  The daily rated and need based workers of  the Power Development Department (PDD), today  went on 72-hour strike, pressing Govt to address their long pending issues.
These workers under the banner of All J&K PDD Employees Union/ Daily Wagers Union also launched dharna in front of the office of Chief Engineer PDD at Canal Road, Jammu this morning.  Arvind Sharma, president of the Union was leading the protest. With the Kam Chorh Hartal of these workers, the power supply to many parts of the region has been affected.
The agitating workers were shouting slogans against the State Government, Dy Chief Minister and Chief Engineer  PDD,  Jammu. They pointed out that  during duty hours nearly 200 temporary workers/ daily wagers have died so far and many were injured but till date Government has not provided any assistance to their  families.
They are demanding regularisation of the workers who have completed seven years in service, release of pending salary of 35 months and implementation of Departmental Accident Insurance Scheme in case of daily wagers.
The Union  leader  alleged that last year 56 day long strike was called off on the assurance of Dy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh, that the demands will be fulfilled shortly but even after one year, this Govt and Minister Incharge PDD  failed to address the pending issues of the PDD workers.  He  regretted discrimination with Jammu and Kathua districts in respect of regularisation of workers.
Besides  Arvind Sharma,  chairman Bharat Singh, Gul Mohd vice president, secretaries -Gurnam Singh, Ajay Sharma and Parveen Kumar also spoke on the occasion.
