SRINAGAR, May 14: Around 8,000 non-gazetted employees, casual workers, daily wagers and need based workers of Power Development Department (PDD) and Power Development Corporation (PDC) today observed a day long state-wide pen down strike against the electrocution of a need based worker on Saturday last.
The call for strike was given by Jammu and Kashmir Central Non-Gazetted Electrical Employees Union against the electrocution of Bilal Ahmad Mugloo. Bilal died due to an electric shock while carrying out repairs of the transmission line at Karan Nagar on Saturday morning.
PDD and PDC line-staff comprising of line-men, meter readers and inspectors assembled at different places and raised their protest against the incident. The protesters demanded adequate compensation to the family members of Bilal. They demanded a judicial probe in the incident adding the engineers present at the time of incident should be attached with the Chief Engineer’s office.
The protest demonstrations were carried out at Chief Engineer PDD Bemina and Sub-Transmission Division PDD Rajbagh. Similar protests were held at Kargil and Leh in the Ladakh division.
Terming Bilal’s death as unfortunate, Rafiq Ahmad Khanyari, State President, Jammu and Kashmir Central Non-Gazetted Electric Employees Union said that Bilal’s death has once again exposed chinks in the policy for the daily wagers and need based workers of the PDD.
Purshottam Sharma, General Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Central Non-Gazetted Electric Employees Union, said that a job under SRO-43 should be given to Bilal’s family members. He said that cash compensation of Rs. 10 lakhs should also be given to the Mugloo family.
“Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah who is the Power Minister as well should announce a proper policy regarding compensation for the PDD line staff. Every now and then casualties and amputation of PDD daily rated workers and need based workers take place. This needs to be looked into by the Government particularly by the Chief Minister,” said Purshottam.
