JAMMU/ SRINAGAR, Nov 19: Former minister and president Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) Ghulam Ahmed Mir today said that PDP-BJP dispensation has weakened the Panchayati Raj Act for its vested interests.
Addressing a large function organized by Congress party at Sainik Colony in connection with the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi today, PCC chief lashed out at the PDP-BJP Govt for weakening the democracy by further diluting the Panchayati Raj Act through amendment which has reversed the steps taken by the Congress party during previous coalition by introducing the 73rd amendment in the State.
Mir exhorted the cadres to strengthen democracy at the grass- root level and give a befitting reply to those opposed to the principles of powers to the people. He said both PDP and BJP which have fast lost ground is now hell bent to weaken the Panchayats for their vested political interests.
PCC chief said the time has come to strengthen the ideology and principles followed by the Congress party and its great leaders for strengthening the secularism, socialism and inclusive democracy.
Sham Lal Sharma, senior vice president while paying rich tributes to late Gandhi recalled some of her contributions and bold steps for which nation would ever remain indebted to her. He said that she was really an iron lady and a bold leader. He also paid tributes to Rani Jhansi for her contribution and sacrifices for the freedom movement.
Mula Ram recalled her role as a leader of international repute, who raised the esteem of the nation by her foresighted decisions and dynamic leadership. She always pursued policies to uplift the poor and marginalized population of the country.
Raman Bhalla described her a leader of firm determination and great courage who took revolutionary steps during her leadership of the Country and sacrificed her life for the unity and integrity of the country.
Many senior functionaries of Pradesh Congress, Legislators, former Ministers and Legislators District presidents, leaders of frontal organizations, Mahila Congress, Youth Congress, INTUC, Seva Dal, NSUI, Cells of Party, office bearers and delegates from different blocks of Jammu province attended the function.

At Srinagar, similar function was organized by PCC to pay floral tributes to India Gandhi, on her birth anniversary at Congress headquarters today. The party leaders and workers recalled the sacrifices and selfless services rendered by the former Prime Minister to the nation. The leaders also hailed the great contributions of late Gandhi in nation building and empowerment of people from grass roots level.
