JAMMU, Mar  26: Describing National Conference as a movement of masses, Provincial President Devender Singh Rana today exhorted people to further strengthen it for achieving larger objective of making Jammu and Kashmir peaceful, progressive and prosperous State.
Welcoming Dr Surjit Bhagat, retired Divisional Manager Oriental Insurance Company and Dr Parvinder Bhagat, Asst Prof Jammu University in National Conference at an impressive function at Miran Sahib here this afternoon, Mr Rana said joining of veterans from different fields of life will make this movement cohesive and broad based.
He said history of the State is replete of instances how National Conference withstood the challenge of divisive elements and forged bonds of fraternity and brotherhood among various segments of society even during most horrendous times.
“These elements are active even now though in different guises, bent upon to create a wedge between the people to further their political interests”, he cautioned.
In this context, he referred to the recent bonhomie between the People’s Democratic Party and Bharataya Janata Party, which publicly exposed their clandestine objective of dividing the people of the State on communal and regional lines to achieve their nefarious political agenda. For weakening National Conference they joined hands during elections to the Legislative Council, he maintained.
For the lust of power, these two parties-which are in fact two faces of the same coin-can go to any extent, he said and called upon the people to remain vigilant by their machinations.
Mr Rana said also cautioned against the attempts being made by vested interests to disrupt peace by raising emotive slogans and reiterated that National Conference will foil these with the active support of the people. “They will not be allowed to derail peace and the process of development going across the state”, he added.
While referring to the initiatives taken by the government led by Chief Minister Mr Omar Abdullah, the Provincial President said that besides restoring peace, ensuring development and creating avenues of opportunities for the unemployed youth, National Conference has ensured historic Panchayat elections with a view to take power from Civil Secretariat to the grass roots level.
Among others who were present on the occasion included B.D. Bhagat, Dr. Chaman Lal Bhagat, Taranjeet Singh Tony, District President, Daljeet Sharma, S. Balwinder Singh, Comrade Pritam Singh, Sukhdev Manhas, Raj Kumar, Tarsem Lal, Naresh Singh, Krishan Lal, Kulvinder Singh and Sangat Singh.
