Poonch, Aug 3: Former Deputy Chief Minister and senior leader of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Muzaffar Hussain Beig today said that PDP has scripted a new chapter of peace and development in Jammu and Kashmir and changed political discourse of the State through its visionary and pro-peace policies.
Addressing a function here today in connection with the foundation day celebrations of the party, Mr Beig said that PDP was formed in  1999 with the aim to restore and uphold the dignity and honour of every resident of Jammu and Kashmir. “There was a sense of fear and insecurity among the people when PDP was formed”, he recalled and added that through its pro-peace agenda PDP had not only created a sense of security among the people but also restored dignity of the common masses by implementing peace and reconciliation policies.
Mr Beig recalled that when PDP was formed situation was tense on the borders and inhabitants of border areas were bearing maximum brunt of the hostility.
PDP facilitated dialogue between India and Pakistan and convinced both the countries to take some concrete Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) to restore lasting peace in this region.
“Biggest achievement of  PDP was that it had convinced both India and Pakistan to take some bold Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) to establish lasting peace in this region”,  he said and pointed out that prevailing peace on the borders was result of the peace and reconciliatory policy of PDP. He especially mentioned the historic rally of the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at Srinagar in which Vajpayee had extended hands of friendship towards Pakistan.
Pointing towards rampant corruption in J&K, Mr Beig said that during the last nearly five years, Omar Abdullah led regime has done nothing to minimize miseries of the people. “Patronizing corruption, shielding those who are involved in scams, undermining autonomous institutions are the noticeable “achievements” of the present regime”, he added.
Yashpal Sharma, (MLC), Basharat Bukhari, (MLA), Mohd Rashid Qureshi, Hamid Manhas, Shah Mohammad Tantray, Shamim Ganai,  Shamim Dar, Shahzad Khan, Gurmeet Singh and others also spoke on the occasion.
